This workshop will introduce three techniques for making bonsai pots by hand, guided by master bonsai potter Kakuzan of Tokoname, Japan. Students of any experience level will create multiple displayable high-fire bonsai pots in their own style and choice of glaze. There will be three sections to each class, each section beginning with everyone making the same design with Kakuzan, followed by free time for each student to make their own designs. The pots will be glazed and fired in Nao Tokutake’s kiln and delivered at a future BSOP meeting. This class is perfect for those with little or no prior clay experience and all materials and tools will be provided. Please note - The workshop fee of $125 includes all materials and tools needed.

Description of workshop pots:

An example of a Pinch pot style: A smaller pot made from a ball of clay pinched out into a bowl form. Great for accent plants or shohin bonsai with a rustic feel. Students can make multiple pots.

An example of a Coil built pot style: A slightly larger round form made by coiling ropes of clay. Great for smaller bonsai. Your imagination is the only limit for the shape and feeling of the pot. Students can make multiple pots (if time allows.)

Three examples of a small Slab built pot style: Pots made with sheets of clay folded or cut into any shape. Students can make multiple pots (if time allows.)
