Review of 2002
Here is a  brief description of some of the club events of 2002.  If you want to receive the famous monthly Bonsai newsletter (on paper, mailed to you), please join the Bonsai Society of Portland and get the full scoop of what has happened or will be happening with this lively group.

January
Lee Cheatle gave a hands-on demonstration of slab pots.  They are made from peat moss, vermiculite (or pearlite)  and portland cement.

February
Transplanting, wiring, getting trees ready for spring, root grafting.   Lectures and demonstrations were given on Satsuki azaleas, Larch and Hemlock, Pines, and Shohin

March 26
An ever-popular "Bring Your Own Tree" workshop

Other workshops were:

"Day of the Tridents" -- meeting of this ongoing workshop at Robert Guitron's Koyama Nursery in Portland.   Robert demonstrated two types of grafts that could be used to increase or better root placement.  The main emphasis was on drilling a hole through the Trident and the proper use and preparation of a year-old Trident maple seedling.  Root pruning and repotting were discussed.  People drilled, people hammered, people tore at root systems.  People mixed soil.  And best of all, people left in amazement with what they had accomplished in a few hours.

"Root Over Rock" Workshop by Alan Taft at Wee Tree Farm in Corvallis.  Alan explained the overall picture, then went into the specifics involving mixing the muck needed to hold and protect the roots, how much to use so that the roots would be in their proper position later on, and the proper mixture.  He showed how raffia plays an important part in securing the tree to the rock without leaving the damaging scars that are often visible when wire is used.  Class members chose among maples, linden, and chinese elm to begin creating their own root-over-rock masterpieces.   As a result, each person had the start of a good root-over-rock to take home.  The entire process will take several years to fully accomplish, but the hours spent with Alan got the process off to a good start.

Phoenix Graft "Phoenix" Workshop by Alan Taft at Wee Tree Farm in Corvallis.  Wood was lovingly prepared to accept Juniper whips -- which were planted to bond with the sculptured dead wood.

April
A New Member Orientation was held.

Special Dig -- took place under threat of rain at Gene Gold's nursery, yielding Oak and Hawthorn to be turned into bonsai treasures.
